Because of the education standards movement, school-based SLPs find they are asked to relate to their state's standards. The Common Core State Standards are the most common standards, adopted in over 40 states. This course will briefly review the history of the standards and present a method for analysis of standards to plan for intervention for students with speech sound disorders. The method begins with analysis of grade level standards, with a focus on those that may be challenging for children with speech sound disorders. Analysis of student strengths and needs and the communication expectations of the classroom follow. Using this information, SLPs plan intervention to enable the student to be successful in attaining the standards. Two speech sound disorder case studies are included. Offered for 0.1 ASHA CEUs – 1 contact hour.

  1. Explain the purpose and expectations of education standards (specifically the Common Core).

  2. Identify the speaking and listening expectations of the Common Core State Standards.

  3. Identify strategies for integration of core standards into our intervention with children with speech sound disorders.

A score of 80% or better must be received on the post test in order 
to receive a certificate of completion.

 

Lissa Power-deFur, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a professor in the communication sciences and disorders program at Longwood University in Virginia. Among the courses she teaches is public school methods, which focuses on supporting children's mastery of the language expectations of the Common Core State Standards.

Prior to joining the faculty at Longwood, Dr. Power-deFur worked at the Virginia Department of Education in special education, student services, and policy, where she first developed her interest in analyzing the language and communication expectations of the general curriculum.

Dr. Power-deFur is a Fellow of ASHA and the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia, and regularly volunteers for the profession. She has served as a state education advocacy leader and as a member of numerous education-related committees at ASHA. She is the ASHA 2014-2016 vice president of standards and ethics in speech-language pathology. Additionally, she received The ASHA Leader Outstanding Service Award for her 2011 article on special education eligibility.

ASHA CEUs: NSS online courses are registered with ASHA and are offered for ASHA CEUs. The number of CEUs is noted above. Note that 0.1 CEU = 1 contact hour = equals 1 CEE.

Licensing Boards: Most state licensing boards DO accept CEUs earned online (usually classified as home-study credits). Some state boards do, however, place a limit to the number of credits that can be earned via home study/online courses. For the most current information, we suggest that you contact your licensing board or agency to verify acceptance policies and/or any credit limits related to home-study courses prior to registering for this course.

ASHA CE Registry:  During the enrollment process, if you select to receive ASHA credit for this course and if you provide your ASHA number, NSS will automatically submit your CEU information to the ASHA CE Registry after successful course completion (80% on post test). This submission happens once per month, during the first week of the month. For example, if you complete your course on November 7th, NSS will submit all November online course CEUs to ASHA during the first week of December. When ASHA inputs the information into their database, they will mark the course as completed on the last day of the month in which it was completed, so November 30th using this example. The certificate of completion available for you to print immediately, however, will reflect the actual completion date, November 7th in this example. Due to ASHA processing procedures please allow 2-3 weeks, from the submission date, for the course to appear on your ASHA transcript.

ASHA CEUS: Attendees must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:

  • Current ASHA Member
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
  • Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology
  • Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
  • Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
  • Engaged in a Clinical Fellowship under the supervision of an individual with their ASHA CCC
  • Currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program in SLP or audiology

If an attendee is not an ASHA member or CCC holder but meets any of the above criteria, they may inform the ASHA CE Registry of their eligibility by visiting this site.

  • Course Completion Timeframe: You have unlimited time to complete this online course. You may log off and log on as you wish in order to complete all sections of this course.

  • Content Access: Access to course materials and content does not expire, even after completing the post test. You may continue to review course material by logging into your NSS account, clicking the E-Courses tab, and then viewing your desired course.

  • Certificate of Completion: On successful completion of the post test (80%), a certificate will be immediately available for download and/or printing. This certificate will include your name, date of completion (based on the Eastern Standard Time Zone), and number of contact hours (CEUs / CEEs).
