Presenter: LeAnna Heinrich, MS, CCC-SLP
– K.L., prior course participant
Whenever speech-language pathologists need to consider different forms of service delivery because of factors beyond their control, like COVID-19, stress levels will increase. When this occurs there is often a tendency to focus on only one option (telepractice) when other forms of interventions may be more appropriate, for example, a consultative approach, when telepractice is not an option.
This course focuses on a consultative model of intervention examining social and emotional concerns when providing services virtually. This course also includes functional speech and language strategies and is most relevant for clinicians working with preschoolers and school-age children.
Course is offered for 0.2 ASHA CEUs – 2 Contact Hours.

"Beneficial activities that can work with all ages when making recommendations to families. I liked the slide about the different illnesses that occurred previously." D.L. (Dec. 2024)
"Managing screen time was beneficial to discuss. I liked the suggestions regarding privacy." S.D. (Oct. 2024)
"Discussing how to protect privacy when using teletherapy was beneficial. The course was clear and practical." M.N. (Dec. 2023)
"Knowing what other forms of service delivery are acceptable. Very easy to follow course." H.M. (Dec. 2023)
"The recommended activities for telepractice to relay to parents confirmed what I would do. I liked that common sense was provided as well as necessary privacy needs." S.S. (Aug. 2023)
"I love the reminder that language can be incorporated into all everyday activities. The discussion of limiting screen time was good. The continuum of interaction and passiveness was beneficial." S.Q. (Aug. 2023)
"Considering the client's environment and routine when providing carry-over activities was beneficial to discuss. Clear and short presentation." D.S. (Jun. 2023)
"I appreciated the list of recommended activities for parents/families to engage in during distance learning. I appreciated the presenter giving us a short history of other pandemics and how people coped with them. I liked that she recognized that teletherapy is not easy and it is not for every child and/or family." C.D. (Jun. 2023)
"Good information about how parents can help and making sure parents have what they need. This course offered helpful information and websites when doing online therapy." L.W. (Dec. 2022)
"Presenter spoke slowly and deliberately and with many examples. I liked the educational information for supporting families and teachers. The references provided in this workshop will be beneficial." K.C. (Nov. 2022)
"I will benefit from this course content." K.D. (Oct. 2022)
"Good reminder to be creative with what the child has at home to work with. And that we can still control screen time even if we are doing telepractice." M.R. (Sept. 2022)
"I would recommend this course to my SLP colleagues." K.W. (Jul. 2022)
"I liked the supportive information for having parents directly involved, and using daily activities and materials in the home as a means of providing effective therapy. So many parents continue to expect the clinician to wholly and consistently provide 'academic' materials & activities on screen. Prepping and sending needed hands-on materials for pre-K & K students has been absolutely overwhelming at times! All of the suggested activity ideas & resources are very much appreciated." K.L. (Feb. 2022)
"Practical suggestions for providing speech and language activities at home. Also, considering the parent's work load, number of children at home, stress in household, etc... when planning speech and language sessions and activities for the child." K.W. (Feb. 2022)
"Great examples related to screen time and recommending activities for use in home with family involvement. I liked the discussion on screen time, and how to minimize negative outcomes." T.A. (Feb. 2022)
"I liked the ideas for functional language and speech activities in the home." T.A. (Jan. 2022)
"I loved all of the recommended activities to implement when you have to deliver a different service model." R.M. (Jan. 2022)
"It's beneficial to note that telepractice may not be the best practice; that as an SLP, there are many options for providing support, services, and follow up with clients and families. These opportunities may even be more welcome, now, than if they were suggested during normal times as carry-over or family activities. It was reinforcing to the SLP and the efforts being made to provide services in a challenging time." A.H. (Jan. 2022)
"Thank you for providing an in depth study into how Covid 19 has affected our profession as well as other professions. Also, the strategies offered were very helpful and useful." R.M. (Jan. 2022)
