Course enrollment opens January 2, 2025.

The BaByVFSSImP™ approach provides a standardized protocol to interpret and communicate VFSS results in bottle-fed babies. This self-guided training will systematically teach participants 21 components of the swallow along with a standardized scoring metric that together comprise the BaByVFSSImP™ assessment. The training format provides ample opportunity for interactive practice in interpreting videofluoroscopic swallow studies. When ready, participants will demonstrate their competency within the reliability zone testing.

Participants may work at their own pace, may stop and start the training at any point, and have unlimited time to complete this training. The reliability testing may be repeated as needed to achieve the competency threshold. Course focus is bottle-fed babies.

Offered for 2.3 ASHA CEUs – 23 contact hours.

1. LEARNING ZONE:

Participants are taught 21 components of the swallowing mechanism and their associated impairment scores which together comprise the BaByVFSSImP™ assessment. Component scores are taught via narrated PowerPoint presentations. (Self-paced.)

2. TRAINING ZONE:

Participants practice scoring each BaByVFSSImP™ component, initially on single, isolated swallows taken from swallow studies, and then practice scoring each component on full MBS studies. Immediate feedback is provided and this zone may be repeated as needed to refine scoring accuracy. (Self-paced.)

3. RELIABILITY ZONE:

This is the testing zone. Participants are tested on their newly acquired skill in using the BaByVFSSImP™ scoring metric to successfully capture and profile swallowing impairment in bottle-fed babies. Ten VFSS are presented for scoring. Accuracy of 80% or higher must be achieved on each of the 21 components. Partial retests are required only on those components scored with less than 80% accuracy. (Self-paced.)

  4. Apply the BaByVFSSImP™ scoring metric to videofluoroscopic swallow studies cases.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to score successfully (with 80% accuracy) each of the 21 components when viewing videofluoroscopic swallow studies of bottle-fed babies.

Post Test and Certificate of Completion:

Accuracy of 80% or higher must be achieved on each of the 21 components across the 10 swallow studies in the Reliability Zone testing in order to receive a certificate of completion and earn Registered BaByVFSSImP Clinician status. ASHA CEUs: NSS online courses are registered with ASHA and are offered for ASHA CEUs. The number of ASHA CEUs is noted above. Note that 0.1 ASHA CEU = 1 contact hour = equals 1 CEE.

ASHA CE Registry: During the enrollment process, if you select to receive ASHA credit for this course and if you provide your ASHA number, NSS will automatically submit your CEU information to the ASHA CE Registry after successful course completion (80% on post test). This submission happens once per month, during the first week of the month. When ASHA inputs the information into their database, they will mark the course as completed on the last day of the month in which it was completed, so November 30th using this example. The certificate of completion available for you to print immediately, however, will reflect the actual completion date, November 7th in this example. Due to ASHA processing procedures please allow 2-3 weeks, from the submission date, for the course to appear on your ASHA transcript.

ASHA CEUs: Attendees must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:
