    The structure of this book consists of three parts:

    Part I – Diagnosis. This section is foundational and addresses items such as obtaining the exact diagnosis, staging the person, and considering the various memory systems all in the context of appropriate treatment planning.

    Part II – Evaluation Techniques. Discussion focuses on test instruments and evaluation techniques specific to identifying frontal lobe disorders and the specific stage of the dementia are reviewed. Included in this discussion are the Global Deterioration Scale and the Allen Cognitive Levels and how these two cognitive tools can assist in managing clients with dementia and how they help in matching specific treatments with specific stages of deterioration. In addition, there is discussion of medications and how each specifically affects cognitive behavior.

    Part III – Interventions. Discussion includes evidence-based interventions including use of routines, environmental adaptations, utilizing preserved procedural memory abilities, behavioral memory techniques like spaced retrieval and errorless learning, Montessori-based dementia training and program implementation strategies.

    Throughout this text the authors stress the importance of using evidence-based interventions and how doing this can lead to predictable and positive outcomes.

    Dr. Margaret P. Calkins, PhD, is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of environments for the elderly, especially those with Alzheimer's and other dementias. After completing an A.B. in psychology at Kenyon College, she received her Masters and Ph.D. of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dr. Calkins has spent many years exploring the therapeutic potential of the environment—social and organizational as well as physical—particularly as it relates to frail and impaired older adults. A member of several national organizations and panels which focus on issues of care for cognitively impaired older Americans, she speaks frequently at conferences both here in the US and abroad. She has recently served on several design juries, which seek to identify state of the art facilities in both health care and long term care. She has published extensively, and her book Design for Dementia: Planning Environments for the Elderly and the Confused was the first comprehensive design guide for special care units. Most recently she developed a four-volume book set titled Creating Successful Dementia Care Settings (see product page for information). Dr. Calkins has served as Principal Investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health. She is also Senior Fellow Emeritus of the Institute on Aging and Environment at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

    Dr. Cameron J. Camp, PhD, is a noted psychologist and international lecturer specializing in applied research in gerontology and applied cognitive aging.     Natalie F. Douglas, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Central Michigan University. She completed her B.S. and M.A. degrees at Ohio University and her Ph.D. at the University of South Florida (USF). At USF she investigated adult neurogenic disorders and the implementation of evidence-based practices in services for individuals with dementia. Her research aims to advance implementation science, communication and quality of life interventions for people with dementia, and life participation approaches to the treatment of aphasia.     Jerry Hoepner, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. Dr. Hoepner’s teaching research focuses on non-course based learning opportunities (e.g., immersion learning, undergraduate research, course-embedded clinical experiences), apprenticeship pedagogy, and training CSD students as educators. This research has been published in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Journal of Teaching and Learning with Technology, and Council of Undergraduate Research Quarterly. He also remains active in clinical research, including student and camper outcomes at the Chippewa Valley Aphasia Camp, social networking applications for individuals with aphasia, Video Self-Modeling interventions for individuals with acquired cognitive disorders, and communication partner training. This research has been published in a variety of journals Brain Injury, Aphasiology, and the Journal of Interactional Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In addition, Dr. Hoepner has published several chapters in edited texts. He remains active in community programming for individuals living with traumatic brain injuries and those living with aphasia, including being a co-founder of the Chippewa Valley Aphasia Group, Chippewa Valley Aphasia Camp, and Mayo Mild Brain Injury Group.

    Peter Johnson, PhD, CCC-SLP, earned his MS and PhD in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh and an Executive Graduate Degree in Healthcare Financial Management from Ohio State University.
